Bristol and North Somerset, October 11, 2025
We set off from common land in north Bristol that has served the local people and their livestock for centuries, before heading across town to the Observatory and Clifton Suspension bridge, which was being painted by a man blasting out 90s hip-hop while his colleague danced below with the Stop-Go sign to manage single-file traffic.
Crowds stopped to watch a young person calmly and confidently free-climb up the steep cliffs of Avon Gorge past two abseilers who needed a lot of kit and preparation to make their way to the bottom, while we hesitated to peer over the edge of the bridge.
It was an important part of our route to cross the border from the city and county of Bristol in to North Somerset - places where as a local team we both live and deliver The Community Table. Little signs of human kindness and connection showed up on route like a child’s chair on a driveway next to a bucket of apples for sale, and hand written signs outside a church in support of people innocently caught up in war.
We concluded our journey back on the common knowing our friends and colleagues had also been walking at the same time in support of Art Refuge today. Huge thanks go out to everyone who has donated to our campaign!!
