Fundraising event: Dublin

Updated: Jan 30, 2020

Common Grounds Collective are holding a very creative, jam packed night of art and music all in aid of Art Refuge UK. Find out more on their Facebook event page.

On November 29th in Whelan’s, Dublin, we are organising a very special, interactive event: ‘Open Canvas’ in aid of Art Refuge UK.

Doors: 8pm Tickets are only 10 euro to see this nutritious and delicious feast of talent!

ArtRefuge are a charity who work alongside Medicins Sans Frontiers, organising art therapy workshops in Refugee camps across the world. Most recently, they have been providing crucial psychological support to people affected by the urgent refugee crisis in Northern France, Nepal and the UK.

Throughout the night, the room will become an ‘open canvas’, that is, a welcoming artistic space where both you, the audience and performers alike will be invited to create messages of solidarity for the displaced people of the current refugee crisis, through the mediums of art, craft, written word and video. There will be art stations placed throughout the venue, where the messages will be collected and sent where they are most appreciated.

We are currently experiencing a period of extreme change in global power, and it is imperative that we, as human beings, spread a message of unity and support to those in difficulty across the world.

The internet, being the most effective way to share these messages to as many people as possible, will be our platform for uploading the artworks where people enduring the crises will be able to see that we here in Ireland are not forgetting about them.

So, without further ado we are delighted to confirm these fantastic artists who will be performing throughout the night:

Angelic traditional harpist Alannah Thornburgh, Eclectic folk duo Andrew Jackson & Cillian McCabe of Élan The sumptuous harmonies of LemonCello, The groovy genre melting pot that is Hatchlings And, Galway based rock/pop group Rofi James who have recently released a video (see below) highlighting the struggle faced by people who have been forced to leave their home countries because of conflict.

Poets Aaron Nolan and Alice Kinsella wlll stir with their respective unique styles of poetry at intervals during the night.

Now for the fun part. Towards the end of the night, the musicians will collaborate with artists and dancers who will be enriching the performance with live painting, and interpretive dance. The live paintings created on the night will then be auctioned off, with all proceeds going to Art Refuge UK, giving you the chance to support a great cause while also aquiring a beautiful piece of art to take home with you!

Live painting and Art works provided on the night by: Rebecca Deegan – Artist Karen Garvin-Kane and LW Art with more to be announced!

Dancing on the night performed by Megan O’Brien.

Support a wonderful cause and experience an unbelievable night of talent! If for any reason you cannot make the event, donations can be made here which will go to ArtRefugeUK
