ERITREAN ORTHODOX EASTER

Calais, France, May 5th 2024

To mark Orthodox Easter, we are pleased once again to share images and text from celebrations in Calais amongst the Eritrean community. Images taken and narrated by Alex Holmes, longterm volunteer at Maria Skobtsova safe house where Art Refuge visited with The Community Table over a number of years:

“Celebrated in the car park beside the Eritrean camp, BMX. No rain, no wind… and just one, very small, police car.

The community of around 70 Eritreans were joined by visitors from Calais and a delegation from the Anglican Church including Bishop of Dover Rose Hudson-Wilkin, the first black female Anglican bishop. Bishop Rose was keen to see first hand the situation facing refugees in Calais.

The traditional habesha food was prepared in Maria Skobtsova House by a cooking team of Eritreans from the camp.”

And thinking about all those celebrating Orthodox Easter today around the world - wishing for peace and renewal.
