Yesterday in Wethersfield Asylum Centre in mural Essex we worked across the afternoon on a chalk tablecloth onto which circles were spontaneously drawn and used as templates for rich pattern making, the intense chalks glowing against the black background of the cloth.
Some of the young men told us that their families in other parts of the world were already breaking fast and celebrating the start of Eid. Others were anticipating the end of Ramadan in the UK today, and in reflective mood. In a setting that many experience as full of challenges, and where the pain of separation from family is often expressed, the table could hold these complexities, and different voices.
With all the difficulties in our troubled and divided world, both locally and globally, sharing these beautiful circular drawings seems fitting today.
The circle - a symbol of connection, infinity, togetherness.
And today, we wish Eid Mubarak to everyone celebrating, especially those across the spaces in which we work!
