Early this morning, 5 people died off the coast of northern France when more than 70 people tried to board a boat in freezing waters. Our thoughts are with family, friends and loved ones of those who died, and with everyone impacted by this terrible event.
This is yet another tragedy that should never have happened. We know that deterrents don’t work. As we ourselves witnessed in northern France this week and have seen time and again, people who have fled conflict and persecution will take unimaginable risks to reach a place they think is safe. More people will die in the English Channel unless safe meaningful routes are created as a matter of urgency in place of cruelty and indifference.
